Hi all! I have been absorbing all sorts of technical info from the site and have not bothered introducing myself!
First off I apologize for being so rude. We're usually much more polite than that, here in Houston.
My name is Frank Lee. I have recently purchased a '79 SR 500 from a local, here, for $700! The cool part is that EVERYTHING on the bike works! The trouble is that except for the new top end (done locally by the guys at North City Cycle), everything works POORLY.
I have spent the weekend servicing the front brakes. The previous owner said that he had new pads on it. It was true, but
he had the original rubber lines on it. To say the brakes were a tad soft was an UNDERSTATEMENT. During the installation of the new steel braided line, I learned that this guy had never serviced the brake system, EVER!!! So, after much cleaning of rusty bolts and fittings, and levers, I now have a nicely working front brake system that I would actually trust to stop me .
I have my experience from roadracing in WERA, Motocross in Georgia, Endurance roadracing in WERA, and Supermoto racing with NASMOTO, and Southern Supermoto.
I plan on going the cafe racer direction with the bike. I want to put good parts on it, and even do the occasional vintage event with it. My ultimate goal is to develop this bike as a sportbike/ vintage racer as far as possible for the era.
Therefore, I am not above re-cutting the frame, swingarm, or changing mounting points to get the most out of a pair of 18 inch wheels with 35-40 hp output.
I look forward to everyone's input as I develop this project.
Thanks in advance,
Frank "the tank" Lee
