...gave me trouble today...for the first time in it's 28 years of life! Always a one or two kick start, but today it needed at least 20 kicks or so. Ran fine when we were going, but when I shut it off...same problem.
New spark plug, air filter is clean and dealer set valves, adjusted cam chain (and replaced a head gasket) not too long ago. A champ of a bike...but this one has me puzzled.
Any insight?

Flooding the carb maybe? Only takes a speck of crud in the needle and seat. Next time it plays up like that, try holding the decomp lever and throttle wide open and booting it two or three times to clear any excess fuel. Then try starting as normal. Or maybe when the new spark plug was fitted the cap on the plug lead gave up the ghost? Put your old plug in the lead earth it against the cylinder and see if you have a good spark? Mick

Just a guess but there may be some crap in the carb that the pilot jet has sucked up. That would be the easiest thing to correct and check.

Well, whatever it is...was...seems okay now. Went out tonight and gave it a kick and it came to life just like it always has.
I haven't ridden it much over the past few months. Maybe something did get in the carb, one of the jets. I'll keep you all informed.

Maybe that's its way of telling you that you should ride it more! You are absolutely right! They are meant to be ridden...parking always leads to problems.

Had the same problem with my 81 SR the other day, I think I flooded it so I wheeled it down the road to a hill and clutch started it, later I found a mud wasps nest in the over flow tube I live in Cairns Qld and if you don't move for 5 minutes they will build nest on you !!!
