Replacement Coil ’78 SR 500
I am wondering if anyone can tell me what ignition coils other than the stock SR 500 coil would work as a replacement. I have looked to some degree and not found anything yet. I am having problems finding coils with a primary resistance of 0.98 ohms, most of the coils I see are 3 to 5 ohms. The Secondary is around 12k ohms/
I know that mounting can be a problem with non-stock coils but I have to find a coil before I cross that bridge. I have been told a coil needs to be for a CDI type system and of the correct ohms range but that is all I know. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

The ones with 3 to 5 ohm coils are for points or transistorized ign. but it's not really critical for CDI. If you ever built one of those CDI kits in the 70's to use on an old car to replace the points it worked with the original coil, no matter what kind it had. The one I'm using measures 0.6 Ohms. It was on sale at Walmart and says it's for 81-95 Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevy Trucks, 84-86 Jeeps, 87-94 Isuzus and 90-91 Geos. The part no. is C846 but the coil has the number 0339E04 on it but I don't know if that means anything. I got it because it's fairly small and measures only about 3" square.

Thanks, that is what I am looking for. I can't see putting money in a new sr500 coil as they are very expensive if I remember correctly.
Can you offer any tips on how and where you mounted it? Would getting wet affect it?

Mine is mounted back under the seat using a longer spark plug wire. You have to put it someplace where it won't get wet or make sure all the connections are water proof.

I would have though that you would be able to buy cheap generic/aftermarket coils to suit the SR in the US! I have bought a couple of generic/aftermarket that cost $50 Aust for use on my XT500's from wreckers and have had no problem with them, in fact they bolt right onto the standard coil mounting plate. The last time I got one the guy actually asked if it was for points or electronic ignition as they have two different coils available.
I know that car coils can be extremely cheap, but I rekon that $50 is a fair price for a coil that will bolt straight on and doesn't require any dicking around.

>I would have though that you would be able to buy cheap generic/aftermarket coils to suit the SR in the US! There aren't any stores that sell motorcycle coils in the US except for some mail order companies like JCWhitney, Mikes XS, PartsNMore and Old Bike Barn. I don't know about the others but I've tried the generic replacement coil from JCWhitney and it's too weak to be of much use. Most autoparts stores have coils for cars and trucks but they are too big for bikes. If I were buying a new one I'd try to get a Dyna or Excel if they make one with the proper specs since they are both very good coils.
