So here's the deal. I finally got my 1980 SR500G running last month after an expensive/extensive overhaul. I ran it for about 150 miles in all. When I returned home, I accidentally dumped the clutch and it died. No problem, I simply kicked the bike back over and continued to ride into my garage. However, when I was about to kill the bike it went from a 1100 rpm idle to 0 without any stuttering. It just died. I tried kicking it back over but to no avail. I checked for gas and IT IS receiving fuel. I then checked for compression and (unfortunately the hard way) discovered that indeed, IT HAS compression. So I tested the spark plug to check that I was getting a spark but it DID NOT spark. I replaced the spark plug with a new one but it still did not spark. So I had a spare coil that I bought with the bike that was brand new and swapped it out but also did not solve the problem. Any ideas guys? Any help or suggestions is appreciated! Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure that this will effect the spark or not but my first thought is to check the key between the flywheel and the crank.

Start with the easy stuff first - check the connections on all of the ignition related wires. An immediate shutdown with no sputtering sounds like a loose connector or broken wire.

Low speed circuit in the stator is a common one after the bike has had a period of no use then used again, costs about $80 to have rewound and should then last forever

Good news everyone! The bike works! However, there is a downside to this. I ran the bike around the block and in a parking lot and felt a loss of power as if it wanted to die. Then it started backfiring sometimes and surged. It died on me about 10 times in a half hour period of riding. I think that the timing may be off just a smidge. Any ideas?
Oh, and I removed the spark plug and found that it was running rich (aka black plug). I was thinking that it could also be due to improper gap measure in the plug. Anyone know the specs for what the gap is supposed to be? I will also check the air/fuel ratio as that may be a cause too.
