What's the procedure for removing the front foot peg brackets on the '78 SR? Seems pretty simple but I turn the nuts on any of bolts holding the brackets on to the frame and the bolts spin. The head of the bolt has a hole through it but no edges for an allen wrench or otherwise.

I just take the nuts off to remove the foot pegs and the bolts stay in place. The two bolts on each side are supposed to be welded to a steel plate and won't turn. If yours turn they must have broke loose or maybe someone replaced them with a different kind. A lot of strange things can happen over the years to a 30 year old bike. My '79 XS750 had hammer marks all over most of the parts in the carbs so I guess one of the previous owners had no other tools besides a hammer. Check the Stand-Footrest parts layout page and it shows the two bolts and steel plate as just one piece, part #18. www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/default.aspx

Sounds like someone has modified the setup...Steve is correct ther should be a plate behind, in the rubber mounts that the two mount bolts are welded to. You will have to get in behind somehow and lock them still... Once you have them out replace them with the original parts...easily bought. SR
