I am sorry to ask this question..... It has probably been asked too many times before right?
Could one of you knowledgable folks please explain to a complete newbie the differences between the 400 and 500 please?
I understand that the 400 is 400ccs etc......
I need to know that if I buy the SR400 next week that I can possibly use a Sr500 workshop manual?
Please help.

Check out the forums at www.netrider.net.au about this, and there's a couple of threads around here that answer your exact question. The only things I know that are different are: Front brake assembly - this is the same as the late model XVS650, SV Renaissa etc. Internal lubrication of the engine and the position of the engine line. Drain holes inside the base of the front forks. Ignition unit is completely different - I'm not too sure about the electrics though. Main swingarm bolt has a grease nipple. Carb is different. Different TDC markings on the flywheel. Heavier muffler. Stupid emissions things running to the carb, airbox and the front of the cylinder head. That's all I know of for now. I haven't owned a 400 and a 500, some I'm not completely savvy on all the differences. For most mechanical things, the SR500 workshop manual is fine.

Thanks Marlon.
i have seen pics of your 400. Nice bike.
Looks like I'm moving down to Melbourne next year.
Be great to catch up for a ride and possibly a jam. I have been playing guitar for about 20yrs and have played in cowpunk and rockabilly/psychobilly bands.
Thanks again for the info.

Paul, you're on mate. Rockabilly band it is. Funnily enough, Mattb, another SR owning Melbournite, plays drums. We're going to have to get something organised! Were are you moving to in Melbourne?
And TC, it's a fake alarm, fitted to a few new yammies. The XVS650 V-Star also has one.
The 500 and the 400 engines behave remarkably differently though - you'd be surprised. The 400 revs a lot more freely than the 500 and is generally more forgiving and easier to ride. The 500 chugs along a lot more. Although 400 and 500 don't sound much different, I guess that's a 1/5 increase in engine capacity, which is a lot!

Looking forward to it.
The Melbourne move may be late in year or early next year. Depends on work contract. I have been looking at Brunswick... surprisingly well priced being so close to CBD... Is there an obvoius reason why this is the case?
I also like Northcote. My work is actually in Mooroolbark which is in the sticks.

Weeeeell, Brunswick is close to the CBD, but it isn't really all that quick to get there, if you know what I mean? It has traffic at just about all times of the day and night that resemble your gateway bridge. Catching public transport... the tram is the same. It also reminds me a bit of Sydney's Auburn, which is another reason it's cheaper than you'd think.
Northcote is a great little suburb, and I think it's prices will soar. There's also a great little pub there which plays Japanese game shows until 2 in the morning.
I've played bass for a couple of years now, but upright for only a small portion of that. I haven't slapped it though, it's hard to with Jazz strings.

Marlon, We would prefer Northcote..... we will see how we go.. I quite like Burwood also. Bit further out but still on the tram line and you get a yard. I have two kids and a dog.
Your gonna have to slap that upright to play rockabilly tunes. Catgut strings are the go for slapping.
The double bass player I played with years ago insisted on gut strings. Look for em.
