this should probably be in the introduction section it's been so long since I posted - lol
So anyway - the SR has languished all summer with only a few rides because i bought yet another bike in June - a 2006 Harley Road King. This joins my Sportster and the SR in my garage. I immediately took it to Canada for a few weeks and put about 6000 miles on it.
My SR then (in a fit of jealousy - I'm positive!) burned out it's 3RD STATOR!
I now have 4 stators in my garage that do not work (bought one from e-bay with a broken coil).
also, the sporty is in the middle of a cafe / streetfighter conversion, so the SR is currently third in line for service. But I miss it...

Welcome back mate...I am interested in that stator thing. Some people have a lot of problems and some have none (...like me)... What is causing this problem? We must be able to work it out between us. SR

I'm almost positive that moisture is getting in through the rubber grommet that supposedly protects that hole where the wires leave the stator and go join the harness.
The first time I lost my stator I pulled the cover off the engine and about 5 drops of rusty water dribbled out - not to mention the magnets were covered with rust. This last time I got caught in the rain and it died on the road. The cover was pulled and it was damp in there - wet marks, but no water drips.
This last time (stator 3) is a mystery to me - the new stator came without what I call the magneto (the wheel of magnets that spins), and will start just fine, but as soon as she warms up and the engines gets a load put on it, will sputter and eventually quit. As the bike was running perfectly fine before the stator 2 quit, I imagine that the stator 3 is damaged somehow.
HOWEVER - as I perused the boards last night, I had some ideas I need to check. I'm going to throw a different magneto on there first, and recheck the stator with a meter... again ... and if I recall rightly, sometimes the heat can destroy the magnets over time, so maybe the pulser coil (the little magnet that actually triggers that beautiful spark up in the right hand corner) needs to go - I've got three others, but can't remember if they can be replaced by a garage technician like me.

Sounds like a top stable you have there . If you get a cahnce, post some pictures of the trip (if other peole around here aren't "offended" by the V-twins )
