iwell the engine is back together, but the idle is way to high, i had thourght this was the engine diesiling caused by the wet sumping but now im not so surte and think it may well be a seprate fueling problem, the bike has a VM fitted im not sure if the slide is closeing far enough? i know its a bit of a how long is a piece of string qustion , but whats the ball park for the slide gap when closed? im also thinking it might be drawing in air as the carb seem a bit lose on the rubber, im wondering if its actualy to small for the original carb rubber. any ideas very welcome!

Obviously if your carb is open that far at idle it's going to idle way too fast! I'm not sure about a VM carb but the standard one closed down to about double the thickness of a business card at idle.

WAIT!!!!!!!!!!! That photo is of the cutaway side. There is NO way to tell from that photo how far the slide is up without knowing the cutaway. And even then, It would be just a guess.

lol thanks Solo, i see how it works now difficult to messure but its about 2.5mm does that sound about right? It's hard to say from the cutaway side. If it is a 2.5 cutaway, then the slide would be fully closed. You need to pull the carb and look into the other side. Approx .5 - 1.0 mm would be about right from that side.

how do i ajust it? is it with the cablel juster were it enters the top of the carb?
oh i notice theres a screw in the side of the carb just visble in the left of the photo, i take that it is that wich sets the slide height?

Correct. That is your idle adjustment. Also, here is a link to the manual for the mikuni VM carbs. www.mikuni.com/pdf/vmmanual.pdfI would download it and give it a read. It will tell you everything you wanted to know about these carbs.

Hi, Also make sure that you can see and hear the brass slide hit home each time the throttle is opened and then the grip is released...ensure a small amount of freeplay in the cable adjustment as well...not too much or the lag will become annoying. How much cable slack is a personal thing. SR
