I have a ’78 SR 500 and have been wondering about shortening the kick start lever by several inches as I have a short inseam and the stock setup is a bit problematic. I have enough weight so that a shorter lever should not be a major problem.
Does anyone have any ideas on why this may be a bad idea?
Is there a shorter lever I may swap out that any one would know of so I don’t have to ruin the original lever if I want to go back.

Hi, You can simply heat the original and bend it a little differently if you're keen to make it shorter. Here is a pic of the one on Mark's SR (I have done the same for the black cafe racer). This was modified to clear the rearsets. SR

i actualy lengthened the kicker on my old xs650, i cut the foot off and welded on a couple of inches of bicyle crank so i could then use a bear trap pedel, it made kickeing a much more pleasent experince, absolutly no chnace of your foot sliping off and i nice big platform .
if your going to cut and weld you need to taper both ends to a point to make sure of full depth weld that way you can grind the weld smooth with the rest of the kicker for a neat stock looking job
