How do you tell it is time for a new clutch. My 79 lurches when you put it in gear. I have adjusted the clutch pre the manual and I run out of barrel bolt before the cable is set at the correct free play. It would seem that as the friction plates wear the clutch stack would decrease in thickness and the lever throw to disengage the pressure plate would be less. In my mind the indicator would be a slipping clutch, not a failure to disengage. Am I just experiencing cable stretch ? In the old days the cable sheath had an adjuster in it to take up excessive stretch. Any advice is welcome before I drop a hundred on a clutch kit.

I would say when it's worn out is when the plates are worn down and the springs get too weak and let it slip. In your case that doesn't indicate a worn clutch because if it wears down you would have more free play, not less, but maybe a worn or broken push rod #1 or #2. In my '78 the #2 rod broke at the end, then the end wore down. The rod is poorly made with an aluminum rod that has hardened steel ends pressed into each end. The part that is pressed into the aluminum is only about 1/16" diameter and breaks easily then it turns and wears the end of the aluminum rod. The result makes the lever feel kind of dead. It must be fairly common since my parts bike had the same rod broken too. If you are out of adjustment you can fix it temporarily by taking the clutch end of the cable loose and putting a washer over the end to act as a spacer between the end of the cable and the crankcase. The #2 push rod is item #15 on the parts diagram here: www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/default.aspx

haveing just taken removed the clutch from my bike (to accses the oil pump) its an easy job only about 30minutes work , so take it off and cheak it out to see if the friction plates are worn or as steve says cheak nothings broken,
(lol but dont do what i did and not drain the oil first, as the oil chek valve is in the cover, so next morning there was a big puddel under the bike! )
