I've begun troubleshooting the derelict '78 SR I picked up... started by checking the stator windings.
Both Clymer and a factory service manual say the charge coil is Red-Brown 334 ohms, Brown-Black 329 ohms.
Haynes says Red-Brown 6 ohms, Red-Black 334 ohms, Brown-Black 329 ohms, which matches the readings I get on the bike.
I generally prefer the Clymer but it would have sent me on an expensive wild goose chase this time. Until I checked Haynes I thought I had a shorted high-speed charge coil. Now I'm willing to assume it may be ok and move on to getting spark.
The manuals agree on all other windings.

Or you need to know someone who has them and lives nearby. I'm glad you're learning all this for when (not if) the stator fails on my bike. Did you see there are 2 SRs in Alexandria for sale on eBay? A '78 and an '81. Last time I looked the bids were low — around $375 and $500. Just mentioning this in case you feel like you don't have enough bikes for this summer.

They must like Yammy 500's up there, because last year a co-worker bought an early 80's XT from a guy in Alexandria. Came with a complete basket case XT, too.

Yeah, I've got at least 7 buddies with SR's... most of us have XS650's too.
