OK... I have not run the SR in years, but the otehr day I went to start it and it did something quite strange.
It "burped" oil up into the stock air box through the breather vent in the top of the transmission.
Any thoughts? I am guessing something clogging the return in the oil line to the frame tube.
I am guessing I'll be in the business of rebuilding.

Its called wet sumping.
Its when oil seaps into the crank cases from the tank. Old British bikes and the SR/XT500 are well known for it. I'm sure there's already heaps on info already on here about it.

If the bike has sat for a long time it would definitly have had the oil seep down into the sump(wet sumping as per aero). I would give the engine a basic service, and drop the oil out of the sump and fill her up with new oil before trying to fire her up. I would then run it for a few miles then drop change the oil (again) and fit a new filter.

Funny... I dropped the oil and replaced with fresh before starting her a month or so back. When I did start, it just seemed off (I had rebuilt the carb, and had switched back to the stock pipe) It started nicely, ran for a bit, but then decided that it didn't to want to run. I attributed that to the pipe and the carb setting, so I stopped for the day.
I am teetering on totally rebuilding this bike, or getting something different that I can let the wife ride to work. That would need to have an electric start.
I know if I do sell it... I'd get more for a perfectly running bike, but was being lazy with the effort and time. (BTW... I have a second SR I plan on keeping)
