It was EXTREMELY hot yesterday in Los Angeles, and I foolishly left my bike in the sun after riding for about an hour. When I went to start the bike 45 minutes later, I couldn't get it to start until I popped the gas cap open.
On my ride home, the bike stalled twice at speed with what seemed like fuel starvation problems. I again popped the cap and managed to restart and ride home.
I took the gas cap apart, and was amazed at how SMALL the vent holes are. Is there any reason I can't just go in and open up the vent holes to a MUCH LARGER size?
Any other vapor lock solutions out there?
Thanks for the help.

Hi,
Sounds a bit like they are actually blocked(ing) up. Not heard of any vent problems on SR's so far.
It gets pretty hot in the Summer here as well, (...not at the moment though...10 degrees C today; roll on Summer...) and no problems so far with any of my SR's...I had the tank on an SP1 I owned cave in, but that was blocked as well.

Your prompt and thoughtful posts are always aprreciated.
I took the vent apart and didn't notice any blockage, but will reexamine.
In the meantime, do you see any potential problems with drastically opening up the vent hole diameter?
Thanks, ccvogel

My XS will burp gas back thru the vents (and thus onto the outside of the tank) if I move it certain ways after fueling on the sidestand, and it seems to be vent-related. Bigger holes = more risk of that, IMO.
Also consider, small holes are your problem only if you can hear air whistling thru them. Otherwise they're working fine and have equalized the pressure, or are totally blocked and are not the problem (the blockage is).

Didn't think of the gas-burping problem; good point.
I better give this more thought...

Hey - as a fellow Los Angelite, I had the exact same problem today and yesterday coming home from work, but mine has a few more issues too so it might be a different solution. However, venting can be enlarged by only a tiny bit and see huge results. i did that for my Sporster when it was having a similar problem and it fixed it right up - no feul on the tank.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll try exactly that - a somewhat larger hole in the vent.
