Is there a larger tank out there that won't significantly change the appearance, balance, etc. of my bike?
As it is I get poor mileage (38-40 mpg), but the stock tank just doesn't take me very far.
Thanks!

There are definitely larger capacity tanks out there, alloy and fiberglass, but they do change the look (either more café-nated, or vintage road race). Most are from Europe or Australia. There's a fiberglass tank mfgr call Airtech-Streamlining in Oceanside, CA. Finding a tank in the US that fits over the "oil-in-frame" SR frame, and doesn't make the oil filler inaccessible is a big challenge. You're probably looking at custom tank work, starting from maybe an XS1100 tank or CB750? Anyone else have any thoughts?

I agree with Gary, you do see larger tanks on German ebay from time to time, but they do nothing for the looks of the SR.If I was planning to tour on the bike I might sacrifice aesthetics for practicallity but not for every day use. I am getting around 50 mpg varied use including uk motorway speeds ie 70 mph + and I'm running a bit rich, so maybe you could take a look at your fuelling and increase your tank range a bit that way.
Cheers, Ken

Hi, There's a guy in Adelaide, Neil Collard. He fitted one to an SR500 several years ago now. Neil would have a info on the mod and the capacity etc. It was a nice looking bike as I recall. It's on the net somewhere... If you want to e-mail me I'll give you his phone number. sross2@vtown.com.au SR

Hi, A Moto Guzzi V35 fuel tank fits, with small modifications. Will give you a 16,5 litre capacity

changing your front sprocket for one with one tooth more will help improve your fuel consumption and also help your top end speed a little although it will take away from your off the line acceleration.
i get reasonable economy from my 1980 sr500, about 50-60mpg, thats with ripping it up the motorway to work every morning at 80mph......
id say theres definately somthing not right there, you shouldnt be using so much fuel, check to make sure the carb isnt overflowing and also check the air/fuel mixture.
peace

I had a GSX550 and that was that was what impressed me that it held nearly 20 litres , that was about 400ks to the tank . I'd have a look at the cogs and carbie too though . The weight factor will change with more fuel . There is always a sacrifice ! Cheers from Dave.
