Hows it going all, bit of a question regarding my xt?? Got another tank for the old girl off flea-bay and to my surprise when i sat it on the bike the tank fowled on the oil filler.
Anybody know if yamaha changed this filler position from the earlier models???mine is a 78. Tank that i bought is painted a silvery gray with yamaha on the side(alloy tank).
Thought it might be from an xt250 but all the pictures on the net i have looked at dont seem to match that colour scheme???

There are some difference between the ealy (straight axle forks) and later (leading axle forks) XT fuel tanks but I have not had the tank foul the oil filler. I would suspect that it could be a XT250 tank, but if you could post a picture, it should be easy to confirm.

The tanks are quite different...I had both at once years ago and as I recall they aren't interchangeable...but that was a fair while ago now. Someone else here will know. SR

The 250s didn't ever have alloy tanks, plastic yes (TT), but not alloy...so if it's alloy it's not one of them...Post a pic if you're able. SR

Will snap a pic over the week end and put it on this post. When you look at it compared to the original tank it looks very similar only differences being it does not cut back far enough to allow clearance at the oil filler.
Also slightly different shape inside the tunel.

Below is a photo of an '81 model XT tank (red stripes) and an earlier model XT tank that is far less of a cutaway for the oil filter. The tanks are in no way interchangeable. Hope this helps Mark

Yep the tank on the left is exactly the same as the one i bought. Was advertised as a 500 tank.
All ways pays to try and be 100% sure of what you are buying i guess

Hi, It is a 500 tank just that it's to suit from the XT/TT G model onward...it won't go straight on an earlier frame. Still a nice tank... SR
