Hey guys, as we get further into winter the knives come out and I get more involved in my little modification projects... I'm currently fabbing a Honda CL175 tank to go on the SR. I wanted everyone's opinions: If the new tank clearances over the frame are pretty tight, say, 'have to fit on with a block of wood and tapping with a mallet' tight, and there's no room on the front tank tabs for any rubber at all, could something potentially REALLY bad happen as a result?
I'm thinking: agitated gas=big between the legs explosion type of scenario, or even frothy gas=not a happy bike. Is there a really good reason why our stock tank gives a heckofalotta clearance to the frame?
Any ideas, experience? why are tanks rubber mounted?

The main reason for the clearance and rubber mounts is to protect the tank from the vibrations caused by a 500 single. Metal tanks, especially alloy tanks, just split at the seams when being vibrated like this. Frothy petrol is the least of your worries, its wearing a tank full of petrol in your undies thats the problem!

There is also another reason for the clearance and thats because the top frame member is also the oil tank which can get pretty hot. There is an air gap to aid cooling of the oil and to stop the petrol from heating up.

I've done the tankful of petrol in the undies thing. I really don't recomend it. Luckily, I was on my old YZ, and I rode into a creek. Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh
