Really enjoyed reading this. What a great bike!
“The Yamaha SR500 is now what the 500 Single roadster could have been but never quite managed to become.” One of the things that attracted me to the SR earlier on was its reminiscence of old British bikes. As time goes on I really appreciate how (from what I can tell) it's so much better and stands apart as a classic in its own right, and a great performer even 30 years later.

Thanks so much! I remember pouring over that article when I was 15, and contemplating my first SR purchase.

Would have been nice for Aus to get a few of the red E models...still black is nice. SR

Why did they go from disc brakes in the back to drums?

Hey Stew, are you suggesting that OZ did not get any red e models at all? I swear on a stack of bibles that the first one I ever laid eyes on as a boy was red. I saw another in Adelaide that I woulda bet money was original paint. My E model has a repaint of course, but looking inside various plastic bits it sorta looks like it mighta been red originally. Please enlighten me. Mick

As far as I am aware there were no red E models imported officially, all were black and the importers stuck the '500 single' decals on the side covers...did you know that they were an Aus only decal? There could possibly have been a few snuck through though... importers sometimes get something they didn't ask for, plus someone may also have imported one themselves, or painted one up...I recall seeing a new Yellow F model YZ somewhere here in Aus that had come through by error. I also saw a blue and silver UK E model riding around in Perth in '89/'90, wire wheels and all. Pitmans in SA being a bit off-beat as an importer, could have bought one or two in perhaps... There were other red ones of course, the G model bikes, however that had a different looking paint job to the E. Their sidecovers were certainly red. Look here for the ones I know came in officially. home.vtown.com.au/~sross2/I could never say definitively that there were never any around, however I am pretty sure that they weren't imported as a normal sale item here in Aus. Thanks for posting this article, I've read it a least 5 times, and referred to it many times more. Now with tags on the bike I'm riding it more than reading about it. Was a nice surprise to find the local M/C shop had rear view mirrors for it .
