Nothing bad will happen if you don't put them in. All they are there for is to cut down on fin ringing from the vibration.

Sven — when you finish a reply, gently lift your elbow off the "enter" key and there won't be so much black space. One of the "pucks" was missing from the engine on my '81 almost from the beginning, and a few years later I noticed another was gone. After rebuilding the top end a few months ago I was tempted not to put any of the little guys back, but then someone here (Miker) told me they seem to get rid of some of the noises that detract from the music of the pipe, so I bought two stacks of the "pucks" from Yamaha at $4 a stack. I think they make things sound better. It occurred to me too that too much vibration might eventually crack the fins. I don't know if that has ever happened, but once that thought enters your mind, well, the pucks seem worth it just for the (false?) sense of well-being they give.

Yes, the fins alone can't stand the vibes and will break off! I've never seen it in 30 years. Not to say it can't happen on a big single.

Thanks Guys ive lost a few of them i think i must of blasted them away presure washing the engine.
sound deadening sounds more likely than the fins actualy breaking off! if that was actualy a problem (have you actualy seen it happen Sven) those fin extension Bratstyle do wouldnt last long?
but im all for quitening the engine noise so as to concentrate on the exhaust note ;D
