My bike runs great with the lever "down", responsive throttle, and it returns to idle quikley. If i bring the lever" up" it still runs good but doesn't return to idle in a crisp manner,it kinda hovers around 2000 rpm then it will slowley settles into 1100-1200. 310 main,30 pilot. Am i correct in that the "choke" is used in the down position ?? or do i have it reversed....I don't have an original manuel and the books i have offer no mention of the operation of the choke. I know when the lever is down the bypass is open and closed when the lever is up...This is a stock 1979 carb. Thanks,RCM

The enrichment lever is up (horizontal) for OFF and down for ON...bike should run normally with it fully up. SR

I got mine running by cleaning the float bowl but it will not idle with the enrichment off (up. If you watch the right side of the carb you will see the plunger being pulled up as you push the lever down.
If you are used to most bikes, "pulling" the choke puts it on as does "pulling" the enrich plungers on most bikes so that's probably what you are used to. Guys with BSAs and other english bikes have the same problem as "pulling" the air slides on the Amals takes them out of the carb throat, thus off so you have to "push" to enrich the mixture.
I suspect blocked up pilot jet on mind so I've got a carb kit on the way. You might have the same problem.

To confirm: I took the carb off today and found, just as I suspected, the pilot jet was totally blocked up from sitting to long with gas in the carb.
When I first got the bike home I pulled the bowl and cleaned out the main jet and the bike will run but only with the enrichment full or partially on.
I suspect you may have the same problem.
