Here's my efforts so far, there isn't a great deal to see As I'm still machining stuff up/ sourcing parts/ chopping things about.
The donor bike is wrecked 1978 SR500 bought over from Australia. I put it together with 'some spares I had lying about' to get it through the UK registration. It is now registered and in bits again slowly but surely getting a major rework. I want a light weight, fast-ish road bike that wil be good fun to hoon about on.
As it was when it came to the UK, non runner, nothing working except the spark from the CDi box! A complete mess that I should have broken for spares.
Instead I got it road legal with a UK registration, this is the same bike after coming back after passing its MOT and being give a UK number. I even had to use another engine as the gold one that matches the frame numbers is blown to pieces. The orginal motor will go back in, but with a lightened crank and a few other goodies that are lurking under the bench.
It almost didn't pass as it was leaking oil, I got away with it as I told the guy I'd just spilt oil down the frame filling it. The frame was in fact cracked on the front tube!
Back home I tore it down again to started to offer bits up to get ideas.
The cracked frame is now repaired, it turned out to be a cold start on the weld at the front. I ground the weld out and followed the crack , grinding out a groove that extended 1/4" beyond it and MIG'd it back up.
This is pretty much where I'm at now, going over the frame with the angle grinder/welder and making new parts from alloy. Rather then just chopping off the back of the frame I want to make it more XT 500 ish with some nice tube that will follow the contours of the seat and look good, instead of the ugly pressed steel. I bought some nice seemless CFS2 the other day, that arrived on the back of a 44 tonne truck which pleased my neighbours no end!
Couldn't resist showing this; one of many parts I gathered. Wish I could claim to have made this, but I can't! It was made especially for the SR500. Sure I already posted it somewhere, but that post must be lurking like so many other things I can never seem to find round here.
Fitted to another SR that just happened to be lying around in bits
Fork bottoms just back from polishing. I normally do my own polishing, but this time I paid a professional to do the job. Wow what a difference, I didn't have to turn my workshop into a blacken hole and he's managed to get a depth of shine I couldn't. The fork stanchions have been re chromed and I'm just waiting for some new seals before I put them back. I'm trying some cartridge emulators as well for a giggle.
There's a pile of other junk and parts here, drum brakes, lightweight disc brakes, ally bars, Mikuni carbs and bits I've made. I'm hoping when it falls together it'll make a very nice bike!
I'll post some more when I get the work on the frame done, that's taking a whole load of time.
