I'm a brand new SR500 owner, and am enjoying the experience. The bike has about 7,500 miles and is in very good shape. However, when purchased the turn signals didn't work, and on close inspection and after reading the posts here I noted that the flasher relay was missing. The high/low switch is broken off on the left grip as well. I replaced the flasher unit, and thought that would give me turn signals, but no such luck. Flasher unit does not click or anything when I hit the signal switch. Headlight, break light, other electrical items seem to work, and given that electronics was not my strength in high school, I thought I'd ask the forum. So where/how should I begin my search? I should probably by some basic electronic testing equipment, but was wondering if you guys had any ideas on how to tackle this issue. I was told the flasher unit worked when I bought it used, but who knows. Anyway, thanks in advance for your help.

The first thing I would do is to get a new flasher unit. A $4.00 flasher unit from your local autoparts store will work fine.
You will need a volt/ohm meter to check anything beyond that. And a manual for the SR with a electrical diagram.
It is probably one of two things. Either the flasher unit is bad or there is no power to the unit.

I had the same problem on my 1980 SR500G. We tested the flasher unit and the cancelling unit thinking that's where the problem would be. Turns out the signal switch grounds to the handlebars. I had installed a powdercoated handlebar. So make sure you have a good connection at the switch or run a secondary ground wire to the switch (this is what we did). Good luck.

When I first got mine, I had all kinds of problems with my signals. First, I too had the powder coated bars. Next, my flasher went bad from sitting. I tried the automotive style, but it did not work for me. Out of desperation I hit the flasher, and it started working again. Most recently, my canceling unit went up. It's easy enough to unplug, so it's worth a shot.

Are you in the states? I bought a multimeter from Harbor Freight Tools for about $8. I didn't put much faith in it, but I borrowed a $300 Fluke meter from work. The values were the same. It's the kind of thing you won't appreciate until you own one.
