I just recently found this forum and am pleased as the old thumper forum was destroyed by hackers several years ago and was very helpful.
I have had a project SR 500 for several years now and have been fitting it with parts as the notion and spare change came together. I have had some problems riding it however as it had been hard to start hot which appears to be due to a weak ground which I corrected before putting the bike away for the winter. Because of the starting problem I have not ridden the bike much but am hoping that this summer I can work the kinks out and find some reliability in this bike I have spent many hours on.
I first had the stator rewound as I was getting bad readings on the low rpm coil. Since then I have…………. Added a Mikuni Slide pump carb from Thumper Stuff. Progressive front springs Stainless steel break lines, rebuilt master cyl, rebuilt calipers, and replaced front disk with a lightened floating disk. Had some Ikon shocks built for me in Australia and had them shipped to the US. Added an aftermarket brain box as is often seen on ebay from a fellow in New Zealand. Oil line added to exhaust valve. I suspect there are a few other things I have done or added which I will remember as soon as I hit the send button on this.
On the test runs I have taken I find I just love the handling of the bike and the response of the motor. I have two other bikes a Goldwing 1100, and a Virago 920 which is going on the market shortly cause the garage ain’t that big.

That sounds like what I did with mine except I'm still using the stock magneto and CDI. Mine starts on the first or second kick most of the time now but used to be hard to start until I fixed all the electrical connections because the pins were badly corroded.
