can someone give new-to-SR's punter a quick tutorial on the use of the hot start button? my bike is a breeze to start cold but a nightmare when hot.
cheers, rc
ps. and some idle adjustment tips would help also (a manual is in the post)

If the button is working correctly you just press it up & it clicks into place , you set the window & give it a good kick it should start ? When you rev it the button should disable. The idle is also set up by adjusting the knurled nut just above the button. The stock SR carby is a wonderful thing allowing choke (cold starting) & the hot start can be a blessing at the service station for sure . I've got a stock carby on my favorite SR & its like clockwork - prime ,choke ,set the window , kick & it s off . If its hot, kick once if it doesn't go ,press the magic button & its off ! Pretty sure it just holds the throttle open a whisker cheers Dave.

All the button does is open the throttle slightly. I could never tell that it did anything useful.

The hot start button was fitted by Yamaha as a means of holding the throttle open just the right amount for the bike to start when hot. They fitted it because there were lots of complaints about the XT500's that preceded the 1978 release of the SR being hard to start when hot (by people who just have to give the throttle a twist when they kick). Personnally, I never use it, but then I think 32 years experience XT/TT/SR's might have a bit too do with that.
If you are using the hot start button, you "MUST NOT" open the throttle when you kick the bike over (a common problem as it seems to be a natural reaction for you hand to twist the throttle as you kick). The advice I have always given to those learning to start a 500 is too not hold the throttle, but to hold onto the front brake mastercylinder when using the hot start button.

I think that's the whole reason for the hot start button - so people wouldn't have to touch the throttle (and thus run the risk of flooding it with the accel pump). Don't know if they stressed that in the owners manual, but it ain't natural to not twist the grip and so SR's have the hard-to-start reputation.

You knock it to OFF by turning the throttle back toward off once it's going. I don't use it but I have tried it...seeems to work OK. SR
