Hey.
I've got movement so my swing arm bearings need replacing. I was rather dismayed when my local Yamaha guy quoted me about $400 just for the parts I'd need (and I suspect there will be expense in removing and replacing, considering the wheel bearings had practically welded themselves in place!). Any way, Thumper Stuff has a kit:
SWING ARM REBUILD KIT, aftermarket bush, bearings, seals, and Teflon thrust bearings $70 US.
Is this probably everything I'll need? (I don't understand why it's so much cheaper.)
I noticed there's a grease nipple in my swing arm - I'd read that the SR didn't have one, the Haynes never mentioned it, and then I got the Clymer and it alerted me to it. I've never used a grease gun - do I just buy the generic gun and parts for sale in the automative section of K-Mart? Any recommendations on 'greasing' the swing arm with something in particular in preparation for removing it?
Matt

Your local Yamaha guy was trying to rip you off! I would go somewhere else from now on like one of the online dealers such as Yamahasportsplaza.com that offers a discount. Bearings only cost one dollar each from the factory and it takes 4, 2 needle bearings and 2 thrust bearings, one of each on each side. My swing arm bearings are bad too but I can't afford $70 for new bearings so I'm trying to find out if bushings for the XS650 like these will fit from Mikes for $38. After I take it apart and measure them I just might get some brass and make my own on the lathe. They didn't originally have a grease nipple but it's popular to add one underneath in the center to grease the bearings if you don't already have one. The bearings can be hard to change if the shaft is rusted in place so your Yamaha guy was probably quoting you a "Go Away" price to get rid of you. If it's stuck you can find info on how to remove it on here. www.mikesxs.net/mikesxs-suspension.php?category_id=6.3

I think I mentioned this on another thread at some stage after actually paying the $400 for the bits to rebuild one of mine(its those thrust bearings that cost) I'm with you Steve on the next one seen as I just got a ripper of an old lathe for a grand . A bit of brass ,few shims & a regular grease . The only problem may be getting the sleeve to turn in the bearings & not the shaft turning in the sleeve but I'm sure this can be worked somehow cheers Dave
