Howdy all.
I registered on this forum a few months back but never got around to posting (i think). If you've heard this all before do what my wife does and tell me to shutup and go home before i pass out and everyone else starts snoring. I am prone to prattle on....but - i digress (again).
If the images dont work go here...

I have been lucky enough to be riding an SR/XT since November 06. Having riden a suziki DR250 (which met an untimely death on the spit bridge at opening time) and yam RZ350 during school and uni I thought it high time to reenter the bike market via the economic argument to the wife “it’s cheaper on fuel”. I had also bought a couple of months before one of those BUG 50cc scooters which I kept on envisaging myself being squashed somewhat like a BUG under the bullbar of a semi as he reached 60 kmh (my topspeed).
I bought a bike sight unseen on bikesales.com from a bloke in Brisbane called Sandy. He told me it used to be a racing bike created by some mystical old greaseball. Of course he made it sound like the deal of the century.
I got the local Yamaha dealer mechanic to go and check it out and he told me it existed and had plates.
I guess i wanted an SR so searched for one and found this modded job that looked pretty groovy.
I got the owner to kick it over on the phone so at least i knew it started (that was a silly conversation...."what? ok turn it off. what? etc etc).
I had it shipped down to Deus to have a look at and get on the road. The electrics (12v) were shit (still are) but apart from that it didn’t seem too bad. I got i registered (just) and got some nsw plates.
Original setup was...
Frame 1978 XT500
Rear hub - 72 yamaha tx 750
Front hub and disk - 80's gsx 250
Lower clamp sr500
Upper clamp, forks and guard 85 yam srx 250
Engine lower sr500
Head and cylinder xt500
Frame and swingarm xt500
Rearsets- custom
Clutchcover xt500 76
Tank - Cant remember (id's anyone) Honda, Suz GSX???
Pipes hand built chopped up things.
carb mikuni mk2 (is that the same as “flatside”??)
tyres battleax and metzler
The piston was an oversize racing piston.
I got deus to eventually replace the two (one large, one small) piggy backed dials with 2 daytona .
After the kick start mechanism fell apart inside the engine and various other basically unexplainable engine events left me late for work and with an increasingly intimate relationship with local bike transport outfits i decided
about July last year to replace the engine with a stock 94 SR 500.
The lovely people at Firebrand (Brendan and (mechanic) Antony) in Artarmon were responsible for this work.
Off the same wreck there was also a front end going with drum brakes (the drum brakes were all i really wanted, but “in for a dollar, in for sh*tloads more”)
I also had to get a new pipe fabricated as the old one was going at the weld seems. I kept with the same short style which Antony keeps telling me is loosing me horsepower, but I like the style and am more style than horsepower oriented truth be known.
So that’s really where its at now. Just had a new chain and sprockets put on.
I would love to have it put on the dyno up at Wattle Flat with Carl but I can never seem to organise to get it up there… so tomorrow its off to the Dyno at Motorcycle weaponry in monavale for a quick tune, tweak and oil change. Its running a bit rich at the mo and without putting on a dyno theres not much can be done about claims Antony.
I love riding it to work and when im lucky on the weekend.
It sounds great (loud and proud). I do really love this bike and the wife has got it in for it (she’s just jealous)
Any way looking forward to learning lots from you guys, hearing all your stories, seeing your photos and hopefully seeing you on the road.
Ps. Thanks Bize for the pointer to this forum.
cheers Job
Kind Regards
