Hi, I just found this forum - FINALLY! I want to race AHRMA next year on my SR. After rebuiling about 1,000 miles ago (post-detonation on the highway) I had a few issues the resulted in a soft seize and I've got it apart right now. Turns out the oil ring on the piston is tweaked and jammed in there, and the piston is scored. cylinder is amazingly fine though. I'm wondering what to do from here. I'm going to continue to use this bike regularly on the street too, so I need some measure of reliability.
Current set-up: 2mm overbore, 36mm Mikuni flat-slide, 2 stock oil lines to the rocker box, bronze valve guides
Considering: oil cooler, higher compression piston, high cams
Any thoughts? Thanks!

Rearsets and an exhaust system with some clearance for cornering are the two most important racing-modifications. Front brake benefits from smaller master-cylinder and a steel braided hose. BT45 are good tyres for beginners (and wet races).

Thanks Sven. Actually I've already got all that stuff. I was more concerned with the top end rebuild and the nuances of the different modifications. It's time to slap a new piston in there and I was wondering if I should go all out and go high-compression and high cam, or if there are some things I wasn't taking into account, such as oil flow, the 36 flat-slide not being a good fit for that set-up, unreliability for street use, etc.

Especially engine you mean? Well, a nice mc cam (I'd suggest the 25130 for both race and road use), an R&D or so spring kit (save a lot of money and take the one with aluminium retainers!)and some porting can't be wrong. For street use I would run a piston with no more than 10:1 compratio. I'd also recommend to get the cylinder reinforced with some extra studs (M6 bolted into the head-studs from below) An oil-cooler ain't a bad idea either...

Issues 29.30 and 32 of VMX magazine will outline a comprehensive rebuild and a lot of tricks, they have a website and back issues are cheap, its all in the cam at the end of the day
