Im having some trouble here, any help would be appreciated. I have a 1980 sr500. It used to start 1sr or 2nd kick. I was oiling my cables(throttle and clutch) and after I finished It wont start. The bike has been in storage for some time before I got it but seemed to start and run OK even with a dead battery. When I kick it over the lights still come on. I pulled the plug and held it up to the block with no spark. My guess is the kill switch got messed up. I took it apart and cleaned it up but still no spark. Any suggestions? Thanks, Chris

Unless it's a coincidence that something just happened to fail I suspect you disturbed some of the electrical connectors and broke the connections. They are probably badly corroded like mine were. I took all my connectors apart and tried to clean them but ended up replacing them all. It's easy to eliminate the kill switch and ign. switch by disconnecting them. You can disconnect the kill switch since all it does it ground the ignition to kill the engine when it's on. The ign. switch does the same thing but also connects the battery to the lighting circuit when it's on but the engine doesn't need the battery to run. If you still don't get a spark better get an ohmmeter and check out the magneto.

No luck! I pulled the wires and still nothing. Ill borrow an ohmmeter and try that out. Thanks

This may sound silly/simple but If you were mucking around with the clutch & throttle cables it may be possible that you knocked off the coil connector under the tank . Then you would definately have no spark cheers Dave.

Thanks Guys, I got it. It was (believe it or not) the self canceling unit wires. ? It goes now.

No clue here, I started it while I was covering the seat and I guess I bumped them around.
