Has anyone ever figured out the circuit in the regulator?

This is straight forward enough and standard to any 12 volt permenant magnet geny. Super Dream regulator boxes should work well on this set up. A google search should bring up loads of diagrams.

I wonder if the regulator for any 12 volt permenant magnet geny will work without a battery? If they will then I have a regulator from a GXSR-600 I could use if I ever need a replacement.

Yeah, should do, just add a capacitor though. Its only type that use a field coil to get the generator going that you can't run batteryless.
Although I got a puncture on my SR the other night. 02:00 am in the middle of nowhere. That SR still has its battery so I had some lights. I'm beginning to wonder how much of a good idea running the street tracker batteryless will be.
