I really have not had any trouble getting my SR to start (other than when the stator died). My time with a TT500 30 years ago helped though. I don't bother with the indicator window, I just find TDC when the compression makes it hard to turn, pull in the decompression lever to get past that, and give the kick starter a mighty whack.
No throttle at any time, full choke when cold, and about half choke when warm. I don't bother with the hot start button as I find that the half choke when hot works better. As I understand it the "choke" is actually an enrichment circuit so using it when hot just adds a bit more fuel, as opposed to a real choke which enriches the mixture by reducing the air,
My SR usually starts on one kick, hot or cold.
The thing about the throttle is that the stock Mikuni carb has an accelerator pump and if you use throttle you'll flood the thing and then it will be very hard to start. That's what the hot start button really does, add a tiny bit of throttle without activating the accelerator pump. Try it when at idle and see, same with the "choke".
