This might be a bit long winded but here goes, a mate and i was out for a ride about 3 months back and all was going great until his bike coughed and stopped about 1 km from a small town, he kicked it back to life with about a dozen good kicks and then all went well . 250km later 1 km on the other side of the same town coming home his bike coughed but kept going but had no top end . We got home OK and on the Monday he took it to our bike shop , he suspected carbi troubles and didn't have the time to strip it down so let the guys in the shop fix it, about 3 weeks passed and then finally the correct diaphragm arrives from Yamaha ( 3 previous attempts had the wrong part!) . Carbi all nice and new well new bits anyway back on the bike but no joy same problem no top end. The guys think its a CDI fault or maybe the stator, my mate finds a new never been opened stator at a wreckers ( we know its new its still sealed in the plastic bag and in its box) Put that on and you guessed it no joy, at this point they ask to use my bike as a donor bike! hes a mate so i say sure. They change the CDI unit no better they put his CDI into mine it works OK they change the carbi same result. They put my exhaust onto his bike no better, his exhaust on mine works OK. So i guess it must be internal OK it is getting old lets strip it down and see. The rings are worn the exhaust valve is worn but not bad enough to cause this sort of problem but he gets it fixed and guess what SAME result SAME problems . Today he went up and sat with the mechanic and said look guys its got 1 cylinder 1 carbi 2 valves as engines go its pretty simple what could be wrong . He also took the workshop manual and borrowed a meter and started checking the wiring and stuff , both stators were on the bench , the high-speed coil on his old one was stuffed so lets measure the new one , It looks OK but then the F@#@ing thing isn't on the same position as the original one! the coil has been bolted on in the wrong position!!!!!!! three screws hold it on undo them put it into the same slots as the original one bolt in onto the bike and WOW what a machine all smiles. Starts first kick and with a quick blip on the throttle goes to 8,000rpm . SO don't assume that new parts are any better than old ones check everything twice and then check them again! ( who but Murphy would have thought that a new part would be faulty in a different way as the original part but still give the same symptoms )
