OK - I'll start the topic . I've just primed my new tank and solo seat and want to put a GT style stripe down both - does any one have any suggestions on whether I should use the vinyl adhesive and pinstriping I got for the job or go the paint route? Any ideas on the best methods to do this would be greatly appreciated. I'm also thinking of a badge on the sides of the tank - can these just be glued on? Cheers.

Hi, Personally I would have them (or do it yourself) painted on...looks better in my eyes. The later tank badges are glued on with double-sided tape as I recall. SR

I just painted my tank this weekend...I masked off the lines for the pinstriping with pinstiping tape. but these are just simple ones. I agree with Stew, they look great painted on and I would choose paint over adhesive lines anyday. Heres a pic of my weekends work. I used a bright silver paint as a base and then I rubbed it hard with a scotch brite pad to give it a brushed aluminum effect. After that, I masked off the stripes and sprayed with a deep red metallic. Then wet sanded the stripes with 800 grit to make the bike look worn- more broken-in I guess. like it's been racing for decades. I finished the whole thing up with 3 layers of clear coat.

Nice work Trouthunter - that's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of! Thanks for the tips TH and SR - looks like paint is the go - just have to wait now till the weather gets warmer and drier here and decide on the colours. I made a pic in Photoshop so I could get an idea what it would look like by swapping different colours/widths on the tank and seat, the biggest problem is deciding which one I like best!

Vinyl is cheap and can easily be changed. I do the tank stripe in vinyl the first time round. If I like it, I then use the same artwork to get vinyl masking for paint. If i want to change it, its easy when its still vinyl. If you can do your own artwork using a computer graphics program, so much the better. I use Autocad, convert the file to DXF and take it to a sign company.
