Hi, can anyone help. i've got an '81 SR that i'm trying to get back on the road after many years in hibernation. Just when I thought I had everything sorted and ready for mot, it conked out and gushed petrol from the overflow. I stripped carb ( standard 34mm mikuni ) changed the needle valve and pilot jet but can only get it running occasionly, and pretty rough when it does. I found by accident it does start and run ok with the vacuum and petrol hoses dis, then reconnect petrol hose to run. Could the prob lie with the diaprhrams, and how do they work..... Any advice would be greatly appeciated... Thanks in anticipation, Paul

Sounds really rich...do you get black smoke out the pipe? If it's flooding re-check your float level and make sure nothing is stuck in the needle and seat area. Make sure the main hasn't fallen out of the holder, needle position too low? Check the pump linkage for the pin at the bottom still in...and check that the pump lever moves... SR

Cheers mate, thanks for advice. Yes, the plug is black. running very rich when I can get the thing started. I've had the probs since feb and not sure if it's a prob with electrics or fuel. Obviously there is a prob with the carb set up and when i stripped carb i set the float level at correct height , 23.5mm i think. I bought a coil off an ebay site last week after checking resistance of windings on original, primary = 0.8- 3.4ohms and secondary= 9.2k-10.3k ohms , i thought primary might be on its way out . although i get a good spark from the new coil it dont fit on its mount, also get 0 ohms on test. dont know if its any good going by some of the threads on this site. As you rightly said mate i need to set the carb up right 1st. I did lower the needle and its on middle notch. I'll lower it 1 more notch and give that a try

Certainly not, although testing the spark with plug out using a new pattern coil , i'm getting a good spark. But, with plug in and my kick start boot on, it wont run. Petrol is coming through, the engine fires once or twice but dies. I'm wondering whether to replace the cdi. I did lower the slide needle, to no avail and the flooding prob has stopped, so it's a case of what next ! Can I test the cdi reistance or could it be the exiter winding on the stator breaking down....... flumuxed.... thanks for your thoughts Stew
