I have a SR500 manual at home that has a performance section. In the suspension area it recommends stiffening up the front end by using either stiffer progressive springs, or spacers to preload the stock spring. I purchased a set of '78 XS650 forks because the tubes on my '78SR are pitted/rusted too bad to use. Yes, they are a perfect bolt-in swap.
Here is my question: Are the XS 650 springs too stiff for the SR. The XS forks DEFINITELY have stiffer springs the id of the spring wind (thickness) is much greater than the SR.
Thanks for all replies!

Progressive lists the same part number for both the XS650 and the Sr500.I wouldn't think stock XS springs would be too much.I would try them out and see how you like them. Maybe with less preload than the sr springs.

Chew - the interesting thing is on the microfiche parts sheets in 1978 the XS650 had a D and E model. The D model looks IDENTICAL to the SR, but the E model is different. The E has a long fork spring, no preload spacer, but has an adjustable pre-load cap. It is a much nicer design, and without question a heavier spring rate.
Oh, and I purchased the E.

The XS650D is a 1977 Standard. In 1978, there was an XS650E Standard and XS650SE Special. I think the Special had the adjustable fork cap, as does my 81 Special. I have to admit, I thought the forks were the same on all of these, from 77 on. Now, I've put Progressives in both my SR and XS. While the springs are the same part number from Progressive, the directions say to use different preload spacers. I think I wound up using the stock spacer in the SR (about 3"?) instead of the 1/2" recommended and it was tough to get in. The resulting fork action is kind of soft feeling. On the XS, it was easy to put together and the fork was a little stiffer than stock. So, I'm not sure what sense can be made out of this! miker
