Hi, Very nice...we didn't get the red ones over here as far as I know. Looks OK. I've had 3 XT's including one I modified a fair bit...my DCM has an XT500C motor in it as well... SR

Actually it is a one year only brown that was offered in the USA only. Thought of changing it to a white 76 TT500 look as I think it looks way better. Found it sitting in a garage untouched for years. Was used primarily on the street and is well preserved. Only mods on this one are the exhaust, 79 TT carb with different jets, K&N in the factory airbox with a drilled lid, S&W long travel shocks, different fork springs, shorty levers, TT aluminum brake stay, TT aluminum brake levers on the backing plates, and 15 tooth countershaft sproket. Internals of the engine are stock. Will outrun a stock TT500 now and handles better than one also. Starts first kick everytime! Just love the interchangeability of parts on all the 500s. Still need to finish the SR but it has taken a back seat to a TT that is in process at the moment. Problem with the SR project is me changing my mind Bill

Been enjoying the XT so much almost forgot about the SR. Finally been puttering in the shop on it again and making progress. Finally got the swingarm fitted with the rear wheel and disk brake. Still need to weld the shock mounts and make a spacer for the primary sprocket. Get those 2 things out of the way and the rear will be sorted out. I think its starting to look pretty tough for a single. Thinking of dumping the SR bottom end all together and using a XT bottom so I can run no battery and use a magneto instead. I like the adjustability of points, makes timing changes easier and a whole lot less components.

Nice swingarm. Was the front end swapped from another bike? A buddy of mine mounted a complete RZ350 front end onto his 78 SR500, and it worked out really well.

Instead of ditching the SR bottom end, have you though of just fitting a XT magneto, clutch cover and points system onto the SR engine?
The SR crankcase has the boss for the points drive, but it just hasn't been bored/drilled to that the points drive. Years ago I made up a jig and drilled and reamed a hole into the boss on all the SR engines and spare crankcases that I have so that they can be fitted with the XT/TT ingition system. The engine that is going into my racer has been modified this way and runs the magneto, clutch cover and points system from one of my TT500 engines.

Front is from a FJ1200 and almost a direct bolt on with the tapered bearing kit. Only need to make a spacer for the lower bearing. Stops even match up. They are soft front ends and adjustable so it should work fine.
As for converting the SR bottom end, it can be done and works fine but I have a few bottom ends laying around that are good and its much easier to swap the top end than splitting the cases to do the conversion. I also have another low hour motor thats definately not stock but unknown what is in it. Pulls hard!

Nice work Bill it looks OK , those mags look better on the SR than they ever did on the FJ (that should get a bite he he ) It's a good way to get the brakes solved too . Is the swingarm off the FJ also ? Cheers from Dave.

Swing arm is also from the FJ. Takes quite a bit of work to make it fit right. Mags are lighter than SR500 and 16" so it drops the whole bike lower.
