Hey Kids, I'm new in town! check out my intro over in the welcome mat, long story short I'm an SR wanna-be. I'm taking my first Motorbike, a Dirt 2-stroke from '72, and seeing if I can't turn it into a decent 'round town cafe. It'll be my first custom-ish project, so I'll be keeping it simple. Here's my cheezy photoshop plan: This ain't the bike, mine's much more broken down than this puppy. This: To This: So far I've got: Suzuki GT550 Forks K&N Air Filter/removed airbox I'd like to get some clipons and a new seat on there, and take it from there. I have no idea how to do a front-end swap, I just have the two bikes and am waiting for a service manual + the ability to take the headseat off the GT550. Does anyone know how to make up the steering stem or shaving one to fit? can I get a machine shop to do it? It seems daunting, maybe it's impossible, I'll find out, right? Here's the project right now: Feedback is appreciated! Thanks, Davey

Hi Davey, Good to see another cafe racer person around. Clip-ons and rearsets... You could get one of these to fairly fly if you did the right mods. There used to be a GYT kit for them...do some porting, a chamber, 38mm carb and away it'll go. Bit of a shame to change the old girl around in a way. But if that's what you have...Of course the SR sounds much better!...heh, heh... I raced YZ's for years in MX, dirt track etc. SR

Thanks Stew, I feel the same way about messing around with such a good bike built for a different purpose, but I've given it a thought or two. It will be simply one-of-a-kind around here, I hardly every see anything on the road before 1980 in Salt Lake, let alone a custom 2-stroke. This was my mum's first bike as well, she was the only girl at a religious college to show up on 2 wheels and with jeans, so I've got that pressure to keep it a little recognizable. At the end of the day I'll be leaving most things swappable, rather than cutting down/removing tabs, so I feel a bit better about that. Added to the fact that if I don't do this project, this bike just rusts in the corner of a garage somewhere as I'm not aloud to sell it (sentimental value) and neighbor kids have a habit of convincing my dad to borrow it and then trash it. So we'll see what happens.

Davey, good luck w/your project, i love 2 strokes(have a rd350 +a banshee)when you ride a 2 stroke on the street around here peoples heads turn (not that they don't when they hear a thumper) when trying to fit a front end, it's a matter of measuring and is it worth the effort and cash to make this front end work, every thing fits has been a a saying for me for a long time ,only a matter of time and money. I have a good idea: Restore that to stock AND get a another bike for a cafe racer!
then you get two bikes which makes you twice as cool.
Thats how I my collections progressing anyway.

Hah! Milkman, I basically took your advice! I'm the new proud owner of a '78 SR 500 with 16000 miles on it! I got a great deal and it sounds amazing, has some kind of aftermarket pipe, I'm the happiest man ALIVE! So I don't have to fake it any longer! pics and more info soon!
