I thought i'd start a thread on my bike's progress (or lack of it). Maybe this'll prompt me to get off my behind and go through with it. So here she is in all her haggardness: A bit rough but runs good and is great fun. Feel free to say what you like. Staffy's bike fix ego page

Hi mate, Ah, well it's got clip-ons so you're off to a good start...rear-sets next and keep going from there. Have fun and keep us updated as you go. SR

Hi.
Looks like my project.
Like your seat. I have just trimmed the foam on mine, and it looks very much like your, but I'm going to use the original plastic decoration at the rear of it.
Nice bike.

Nothing much wrong with this bike to my eye....no rust or rot, purposeful looking, just tidy and use it. I think there's a tendency to over-restore these bikes then treat them like museum pieces.

I'm gonna keep it pretty simple. Any mods i'll do will be for a reason, ie: Scallops in the tank so the clipons don't hit, possibly a bikini fairing for general fairing reasons. The seat was sculpted by the previous owner. It's heaps comfy but i'd like to take the back half off and include a tail into it, maybe some lockable liftup thing for extra storage (gloves and a muesli bar ) She really needs a new pipe. The Harley muffler sounds great though. It's so f*^&%n loud! I've found a motor with a useable top end that i'll pick up next week. That'll sit around and everything'll be on hold for a bit untill the tooth gets fixed!

Hi, Unless you have a desire to dent the tank....use these things...nice and simple and cheap. Saves spending time making something yourself...item 26157...simple and it works! www.vanem.com.au/Handlebars.htmSR

Ah. Those things. Yeah i thought about them for a little while and came to the conclusion that i want to maintain the complete turn to turn, lock to lock (i must be mad). I've got a mint tank anyway so i thought since the one on the bike has been dented by the bars, the dents will make a nice locating point for the centre of the scallop. I know a pretty good panel beater so i might even look into getting him to massage it and reshape it a bit to make it wider and taller at the rear, hopefully getting a bit more range from the tank. Plus it'll look good (maybe)

Hi, If it's done right it should look good...make the dents even of course and the same height etc. Certainly causes pain when you trap your thumb between the bars and the tank...ouch! The thing I like about the stop plates is that you can remove them and the bike is back to original... I would usually make my own with this sort of thing, I also used to drill and tap the stops to make them adjustable...but for just over $20...it's really not worth it to me. And they go straight on. Should be an interesting looking project when you've finished. SR

Finished? Is any "project" ever finished? ;D $20 is a d**n sight cheaper than what i want to do with the tank. At least i've got that original spare though. Picking up the spare engine tomorrow. Post pics then.

Well it's been a while. The bike hasn't been kicked over now for a good six months. I've had no room in the shed but having just sold the old car that was in there its time to get things underway.... In the meantime i've managed to get my hands on: A) a new computer B) a new camera C) a big bore kit and two spare motors.
Here's a question... If im planning to use my original bottom end, a cylinder with bore kit from another bike, and a head and cam gear from another, do i need to get all these surfaces refaced if any? I'm making the assumption that i need to get the cylinder and head faces machined to match but not sure about the other one.
Also how can i find out what capacity this bore will make the bike?
Is it a good idea to look at a new cam as well or do ya'll reckon it'll run good as gold with the standard jobby? I don't want to go too over board really for road use and why spend the extra coin if it's not neccessary.
Any sugestions for the baffle/muffler? I'm thinking maybe a black supertrapp, i think i saw one once on this site that looked pretty good.
Has anyone had any luck wrapping the outer shell of a different model bike around the inner part of the sr tank?
The important bit is the carb. I keep ready that the standard item is overly complicated and there are better alternatives available. I'm a fan of finding this stuff at wreckers, so, what bikes should i go and raid for a carb?
Now to clean a spot in the shed......
