Cool. I have a cousin living in Japan, about an hour on the train out of Tokyo. . . I really should go over there one day.
What's that first bike? Is it an XS?

Yeah it's definately not an SR motor. It's completely different looking engine and it looks like its a DOHC. Actually looking at it again, it's not even an SR chassis.

I knew SR's were popular in Japan, but never realised how popular until I was over there in 2002, while I was serving on HMAS Sydney, when we pulled into Nagasaki for a port visit on the way to Tokyo for the JSDF 50th aniversay. While walking from where we berthed to the centre of town and strolling around the city for a couple of hours, I saw 15 different SR's. Which is just amazing, as I am pushing it to see 1 a year (apart from my own) back here in SA.
The other bikes that amazed me with there popularity were TW200 Yamahas and variations on the Honda Z50 and DAX70..

Stew I hoped you booked your hotel/tickets to Japan when we were talking about them at your place - when the AUD was about 106 JPY.
Down at 92.40 now......but better than 86.00 last friday......

While i was over there i became good friends with a guy who worked for a local Yamaha dealer. He told me that the sr400/500 was the most sold bike in Japan. They are everywhere! And the custom parts available for them are endless and cheap. I am surprised Yamaha Australia hasn't decided to sell the sr400 here. Especially with the change in several states learner restriction which would mean they would be learner legal.... perhaps when Victoria jumps on the wagon we might see them begin to show up.....

Hmmmm......maybe we should get in Yamaha's ear..... A fella at Deus originally told me (Jan 2006) they had to seek approval from Yamaha for the importation, and were only allowed if they didn't sell them as stock bikes.
However....now they are selling them stock. Those lads probably havve some sort of agreement in place also. Bize might know something more.
You would think it would be worth a stab, when you look at sales figures of other retro styled models out there eg Triumph is now the biggest selling European bike brand in Aus.
BUT we are all a bit biased, and a lot of people are scared of kick starts......
Always seems to be a rumour of a "new" XT450, a more reliable, longer life, version of the WR450.
And the "possible" 2008 tenere......
