Well, this is yet another task I need to accomplish on this bike. It had no keys when I bought it. I got the title, but no keys.
Any advice on how I get keys made for a '78 SR500?
Thanks!

i had the same problem with one of my bikes. take the lock off and take it to a lock smith, there is (at least on kawasakis) a number on the barrel that they used to cut a new set of keys from.

You are correct. Thanks for the advice! I called my local locksmith that makes my duplicate motorcycle keys, and for $25 he will make me new ones.
Now a question though. Will another ignition from another bike work on the SR, like maybe an XS650? The ignition on this bike looks like someone had a screwdriver in it.
Thanks!

Update - keys made (2) $25.00. They work in all four devices including the bunged up ignition. I can only use off & on on the ignition. Park & lock won't work (can't get it turned).

I found that my Toyota truck key will work the ignition on my SR! It won't fit the tank or helmet lock because it doesn't have the necessary grooves on the sides but in an emergency can be used to operate the ignition.

I had the same problem. I lost my key on a camping trip last fall. It was 75 degrees yesterday, so I was jonesing pretty bad. I was able to work the ignition with my steering wheel club key, and I got my jeep ignition key to open the gas cap.

I should have said to use a truck key until you can make it to a lock smith to have a new key made.

Yamaha dealers have made keys for me from the lock number. Usually its a special order from somewhere.

Now a question though. Will another ignition from another bike work on the SR, like maybe an XS650? The ignition on this bike looks like someone had a screwdriver in it. The ignition can be disassembled and individual parts replaced/swapped. Get another ignitiion and just swap out the lock cylinder so that your key continues to work all locks. I'd guess that just the chrome cover is bunged up. This is a a do it yourself project. Alternatively, you can take a new ignition to your locksmith and they can re-key it for you. It will be easier, and probably cost less, if you take your old ignition with you. I did this one of my bikes that someone had tried to steal with a screwdriver. All fixed now. Good luck.
