My usually exceptionally reliable SR500E...well one of several...heh, heh...recently came up with an intermittent and frustrating electrical problem...
The symptoms were; varying rough running verging on my thinking that the bike was going to imminently stop...lights varying excessively with revs and dim indicators...d**n! I already had the Bol d'or down with a failed alternator, didn't need another electrical pain! I was beginning to think that I had upset some electrical deity...
Pulled the plug...simple things first...black as the Ace of Spades...rich running? Carby??? Obviously related to what I was experiencing with the engine...didn't explain the electrical variations though...changed the plug...maybe I have two problems? Changed the regulator as well...well it was easy to do...good to have a few bikes...took it for a ride...no change!
d**n!
I'll have a look at the stator...
...took off the flywheel and the stator 'looked' perfect, looked new...not that you can tell from looking often. Checked out the elec plugs...acheived nothing...not much affects everything, unusual to have a failure of the power and ignition systems as well. Put the flywheel back on again...still not right!
I then decided to change the stator with another one in the shed ( ...we needed the bike tomorrow for the rally for my brother to ride) ...off with the flywheel again...good to have the right tools, (I recall sitting in sheds years ago as a poor air force fitter with screw drivers, tyre levers, hammers etc. trying the remove flywheels from 360 Yams)...yes the right tools are the go!
Out with the phillips head to undo the stator from the cases..."...I really dislike phillips head screws in hard to get to areas don't you?..."...hang on this one is loose...very lose...all 3 were very loose...almost to the point of falling out...
...the 'light went on' in my grey area!
The stator had been loose in-situ and had been moving around allowing large variations in the gap around the stator and cutting the electical power in and out as well as the EMF to the ignition!
d**n!
Once tightened up, a test ride showed that the bike ran perfectly once again! As SRs usually do...
Moral to this story is that often large problems come from very minor things...like loose screws...check the simple things first.
Now to send the Honda's alternator off to Small Coil Rewinds...
