Hey All.
Knowing little about electrics, but trying to systematically renew the bike's electrical system as I can afford to do so, I came across this on eBay: "Lucas 12 volt ignition coil. Genuine. Part no : MA12 45164. Suits numerous Motorcycle applications. Also commonly used to convert 6 volt systems to 12 volt. Complete with high tension lead clip, terminal nuts and rubber insulater. Brand new. Excellent condition." Item number (by which you can search for it): 190159206123. Does anybody have any idea whether or not this would do the job on the SR? $55 is better than the $190 that the Yamaha part will cost. What should one be looking for in trying to find a cheaper universal coil?
Regards, Matt

NO NO NO, you need a coil with only 1 ohm resistance, most bike shops there should be able to sell you a universall CDI coil from MCS wholesale [brisbane] we all deal with them and the coils are cheap, probably about 85/90 bucks aussie, check your coil well before replacing it, is the cap OK? should be under 5,000 ohms and they are only like $12 or so, regards Carl.

Matt,
As per Carl, don't even think of putting anything made by "The Princess of Darkness" (Lucas), onto a SR.
Carl is correct in recommending that you check your plug cap first. The resistors in the plug cap are known to cause all sorts of strange behaviour, I have just fitted a NGK replacement plug cap and it only cost $6.
Also, I am running a universal coil onto my racer (points ignition), which I bought brand new from Japanese MC Dismantlers in Adelaide for $50, I think it is a MCS supplied coil, and they also had universal coils for electronic ignition for the same price.
