Hi all,
Just a quick survey of those with modified engine.
I am currently running a NGK BP9ES spark plug in the hot engine fitted in the racer that I am building. I have previously run BP8EV and BP9EV plugs many years ago.
I am interested in finding out what spark plugs others, especially you guys who are racing SR's are running? Also, has anyone tried the NGK Iridium spark plugs, They cost about $20 (AUS) and I am thinking of giving one a try(another advantage of running a single no need to spend a lot to try something new).

I just run the regular NGK plug. I was going to try a hotter one, but I was having troubles with running a bit rich sometimes, and thouht going hotter would just mask the probelm rather than solve it (too lasy to play with the jetting at that stage)
Plus, whenever something plays up, I always take the plug out and give it a clena, scrub with the wire brush. Do this with the Iridium's and you take off all the good coating you payed for.

ive been useing an iridium plug im my standard SR works well made starting a bit easier and improved my economy a little

I use an iriduim plug in the black cafe racer...BPR7EIXs...for high revs you could run an 8 or so. The first one only lasted one ride. Not sure what happened to that one. NGK eventually replaced it for me. I'll be running 8s at first in my new engine....and I'll see where I go from there. SR

I've been running B8EGV, B8ES and BP8ES with no problems in the race engine. I have bought a B8EIX iridium plug but not tried it yet.

Hmm, that's potentially an interesting issue. If you have a high comp engine, I wonder if the B8s rather than the BPs (protruding electrodes) might be better. I'll have a look at the head and see if I can ascertain what the go is...might consult some gurus on this matter... Any qualitative experience with this people? SR

Thanks for the input guys,
I think I will spend the money and give an Iridium plug ago, I will stick with the "9" heat range because of the compression ratio, better a plug thats a bit to cold than a frying the plug or a damaged piston.

Yep, better safe than sorry. I don't think the BPR (long nose) is available in iridium at that heat range, let me know if you find one though. Colder plug may make it harder to start.

I have just picked up one each, BPR8EIX and BPR9EIX, that the guys at mot Local Autopro ordered in for me. $22.95ea. I will start of with the 9 and if thats to cold drop down to the 8.

Im having problems with plugs fouling in my 78 500. Im running a BP6ES. Im getting one ride out of a plug. I was only given the bike on Saturday (30th Bday present) and am yet to learn the "secrets" of it. Can anyone offer any advice.

What kind of fuel you running it on ? If its running rich high octane fouls the plug try normal unleaded( I was told by a good motorcycle mech that high octane is OK in fuel injected engines but in carbied engines it can go out the exhaust hence fouling the plug up) I had a problem with a little 4 pot 250 ,I couldn't get it going after a run so I changed to standard & the problem went away cheers Dave.

I dunno what fuel is in it. I havent had a much of a chance to ride it to empty it yet. The weather has been pretty sour up here for a couple of weeks now. I hope to empty the tank this weekend and I might try a bit of plain unleaded in it and see how it goes. For mine it seems that it is running a bit rich but its hard to tell how well they are running now by looking at plugs these days with lead free fuel, you no longer get a nice tan colour like you used to with good old super....

I had the same problem with my SR, it went well, but try and start it next time and it just wouldn't go, I had to take the plug out and give it the once over to start the bike. I raised the issue at thr SR meet at Bethanga and was told 'just buy a new plug everytime'. So I will try using standard unleaded and see if anything changes as I get a fouled up plug and a carboned up exhaust also, using the mid-strength octane fuel.

hi colin,i've tried the iridium plug against the standard ngk and cannot spot any worthwhile improvement starting,fouling or running.i have some very knowledgeable mates on the brit thumper club site,general opinion is there not worth the extra money.
