can i use a different coil?
or do i need to use a specific one for my bike.
reason i ask there are universals out there can i use those or will it be a problem.

it's the only thing i can think of.
the stator is ok. i had a battery eliminator connected and the light and horn worked ok. so i know its not the stator. i reinstalled the battery and hoped it was simple, but no.
new plug nothing. no spark.
fuse, ok
battery levels, ok
charge, ok
how can i check the CDI?

You can do simple tests on the coil and the windings in the generator, this will give some indication, but won't spot all faults. Get yourself a wiring diagram so you can see what's going on.
You can not swap the coils between the SR and XT as they have two entirely different systems to make sparks. (I'm assuming you mean a points XT 500--the later ones had CDi). The points XTs use an old type magneto while the SRs used a self generating electronic ingnition (a modern magneto if you like). This means you can't swap coils between the models.
The CDi boxes do go down, as do the windings in the generator that supply the box. The windings are easy to check, the box not so.

i've gone through everything i can. except the CDI. Does anyone have an extra CDI i can use to check my system, and then see if i need to buy a new one... it's the only thing i can't check.  |

I used to use an Accel coil on my SR. It worked fine.
