Hi, still getting my SR ready for cheap rego when it turns 30. It's had a small problem ever since i bought it. So far the fault has been with 2 engines. I had 2 bikes at one stage and swapped engines for a trip to the SR rally. I don't have the 2nd bike anymore, but have access to borrow parts off it.
Whenever it revs over 5k for any eriod of time, the electrics stop working. Lights, horn, indicators. Even when riding alone, just turn the key off and on and they come back. This problem as been with both engines, so I guess it isn't the charging system. It has a new battery, decent earth.
Any ideas?

Is it two different engines but same regulator? One wonders whether a decent automotive style charge/discharge meter in the positive lead to the battery might tell you something. My thoughts are that maybe at high revs the regulator overheats, shorts to ground and drains all current. Mick

still getting my SR ready for cheap rego when it turns 30 I've tried to find out about this on the Vic Roads website, but can see nothing that would apply to a daily usable registration (as opposed to a one off / club day registration). Is this an 'other than Victoria' thing?

Two engines, same regulator. I'll borrow one this weekend and see if it helps. Tas rego is for special interest vehicles 30 years old and can be driven 52 times in a year. A two day trip would be classed as two times. There is a logbook you must fill out before you head off. Funny how you never get checked by the police, you can fudge the book entry, easy if you have crap handscribbling like me. It also applies to other later vehicles, like club race cars. Funny how quite a few Targa Tas cars are registered in Tas. I'm sure Vicroads has club rego. Way more restrictive as you have to be on a club sanctioned run. www.transport.tas.gov.au/registration_information_tas/conditional__special_interest_vehicle_registrationSpecial Interest Vehicle (SIV) registration is a registration scheme which allows certain categories of vehicles to be used on a limited basis and pay a lower rate of motor tax and third party insurance than fully registered vehicles. To be considered for SIV registration the vehicle must fall into one of the following categories: a vehicle manufactured 30 years or more prior to the date of application for registration. A rally vehicle used exclusively in conjunction with Confederation of Australian Motor Sports (CAMS) events A vehicle adapted and modified exclusively for charitable events (eg TasBash, Make a Wish Foundation, etc.) Once registered certain conditions apply to the vehicles use;: Only to be used 52 days per annum A logbook to be carried at all times The operator must have a fully registered motor vehicle under their name

Changed reg, fault stayed. Worked it out, ignition barrel is worn, so it vibrates enough to JUST break the connection for the lights etc, but not kill the engine. All I have to do is overhaul the ignition and hopefully no more problems.
Now...... on to the forks!!!!!
