I have a 79 XT500. I want to make this a dedicated ice bike. It has electrical problems that I can not track down. It keeps on blowing the rectifier. I've tried changing the CDI and stator and neither worked.
I want to strip this bike down, take all the heavy parts off of it and eliminate all the elctrical components to the bare minimum. I don't want lights and don't care about anything having to do with the charging system if I don't need it.
How do I go about this? What compenents do I get rid of? Do I need a different wire harness?
How do I make this bike operate on the bare minimum of electrical components?

The xt only needs to pick up one of the wires in the electrical harness comming out of the case on the gear shift side. Not sure of the colour with out going out to look at my bike but this wire will be conected to the wire going to the points and also to the wire comming from the coil.
With these three conected the bike will run and you can get rid of any unwanted stuff (Lights etc) You can wire a kill switch into the above circuit if you need it. Hope this helps

If you have a CDi its a late model. I'm not sure if they used the same set up for the SR500 or not. Can you post the wiring diagram?
If its a points model you need the right hand coil in the generator only, and the single wire (black I think). The other coil can be removed.

If your motor runs a stator/ cdi ignition, as i believe 1980 american model xt"s did, then you need to send it to a rewind shop and have them remove all the lighting and charging coil windings. This will leave the high and low speed windings and the small seperate trigger coil windings intact. plug it up to your cdi unit. You will have three wires on the exit plug from the cdi, orange, black and black/white. Use a 10amp wire from the orange to the ignition coil, and the black and black/white to a bar mounted kill switch. If your stator, cdi and coil are good then this is all you need to run your motor. Cheers Franky b.

Thanks for the responses fellows.
The motorcycle has a CDI ignition. I am getting ready to tear into it and I will post pictures and hopefully we can trouble shoot together. I appreciate your help.
