Hey I have recently installed a "HyperPack" performance ignition for my sr500 and am having problems with the advance. The bike starts no problem and the timing gun shows it to be hitting the "F" mark on the button however when I rev it past 1950 rpm the advance actually retards ( I think this may have been the reason for my engine failure this summer) Does anyone have experience with these cdi's? have I just hooked it up wrong? I was pretty diligent about making sure the wires were matched up exactly. Also I had my Alternator/stator re wound last year so there are should be no problem there. Help! Christoph

hi christoph,i've put one of the hyperpack cdi's on,no problems.what concerns me is that mine came with the connector block and just plugged straight in to the original connector block.i found the the people at hypepack to be dead genuine.if your in any doubt send it back, you could spend a lot of time checking all sorts of things and the cdi may be faulty in the first place.another check is try another stock cdi to see if this cures the problem, then you will be in no doubt.sorry if i'm stating the obvious but i did not have to mess about with any wiring whatsoever. regards. andy

It retards? That's interesting. Of course they all do, its just a question of how much. Lets face it, the sensor coil on the flywheel is triggered well in advance of TDC, then the CDI has to decide how long after that it fires the coil. Then as the revs rise the CDI waits less and less time after receiving the trigger signal before it files the coil. Sounds like yours waits too long. Mick

yeah either that or a similar problem i had was about a month after having the high speed stator rewound the low speed stator went to heaven on me, kicked and kicked and the thing wouldnt start, which i could tell it was something electrical, i changed the cdi thinking that was the problem only to find out my low speed stator had gone and needed rewinding also. good luck.

Not up with the Hyperpack system sorry...but as a rule most 4 stroke ignitions will advance as the revs rise...they start with less advance to ensure ease of starting and better running down low. My 350 racer uses a modified car trigger system...and a total loss battery source. It is timed to fire at a fixed advance of between 40 and 45 degrees... SR

I know this is an old thread but I was interested in the result regarding the Hyperpak CDI. I only just discovered that in 1980 Yamaha changed the CDI on the SR500, probably for emission reasons, and the timing is different from the earlier models - '78E & '79F use 2J2-85540 and '80G & '81H use 3H1-85540. Could that difference be the problem? I must email the Hyperpak guys and ask. Cheers. John.

Search SR500 on Ebay. They are always there. Just under $200 USD.
