Hi All, I am a newby to your forum. I own a 1980 SR500 which I have recently rebuilt. I use the bike mainly for Regularity Trials. I have had an intermittent problem with the bike. It rears its ugly head if I ride the bike for a while at speed. It starts cutting out and spluttering. I have gone over the fuel system as I thought that may be the problem. I checked - the fuel cap vent, fuel bowl vent, cleaned the float bowl, set the float level, checked the vacuum fuel tap flow all seems to be in good order. I now suspect the electronic ignition unit breaking down intermittently. Has anyone experienced this??? Am I on the right track?

hi colin & welcome to the forum,if at all possible try swapping your cdi unit with one that is sound offa reliable runner, these aint cheap to replace especially if your not sure yours is dodgy.same goes with the coil although they are not expensive.theres a company called hyperpak[new zealand] that do cdi units for £80 g.b.p i fitted one no problem, look them up on the web..change your h.t lead and plug cap and plug regardless.moving on to the carb, the stock item is a quite complex bit of kit in as much it has a lot of diaphragms and moving bits, they can be a pain when they start to wear out.i replaced mine with a new vm34 mikuni after much playing about with the stock item, much better alround.i hope the above helps but check the forum out for other members related problems, its so easy to go barking up the wrong tree, basically over a period of time i've replaced all the above items with new as funds have permitted.goodluck! andy

You guys must think I'm an obsessed wanker by now, but at the risk of further ruining my image, here I go again. My bike did all sorts of strange stuff when I bought it, including riding along fine then suddenly missing and farting at speed. Stop, let it cool off, everything fine again. This was all cured with a 330 main jet and 98 octane fuel. Mick

I'm obsessed posessed & regressed & I have also been known to have the occasional wank & I will only use BP Ultra in my bikes .Its the only one that is good all the time .Some of the fuel we get here comes from the Philipines or Singapore & I just dont trust it . My wife has a Hyundau & it runs like a hairy goat on everything else but runs good on just BP unleaded fine so thats me convinced , just give it a try cheers Dave.

I agree on the fuel front. I'm not sure about hte situation in South Africa, but I know Aussie fuels are shizen housen.....so much so in fact taht we don't get a lot of import cars from Europe etc, particularly in the diesels, as teh companys know taht if people brought them here and ran them ther would be many complaints over their poor performance etc and they'd get a bad rep.
Even try a bottle of octane booster, worst case your system will get a clean through and you're eliminating one suspect on your way to finding the culprit

Here in Ontario, Canada the highest octane rating you can get is 94. Years ago it was 97 octane. Some guys with older cars and bikes sometimes add tetraetyl lead to their fuel, or as milkman mentioned...octane boost. I use Sunoco premium.

Also consider the coil breaking down with heat. It's over the engine so it might be a better candidate for heat-related failure than the CDI.
