for a while now i've not been conviinced that the quality of the spark is up to scratch,it looks weak and starting has gone a bit difficult especially from cold.however once underway the bike runs great.would a weak spark contribute to difficult starting and not be so evident when on the move?.any reasonably inexpensive ways of jacking up the spark?.i hear it mentioned that a strong spark is 'free b.h.p' is this so?many thanks. andy

Hi andy, my old dunger was getting to the 3 to 4 kick stage before it would fire. After i replaced the coil ( 190 dollars aus for a yamaha replacement, so its not cheap) it fires halfway through the kick, and feels happier when its being ridden as well. It was one of the few original parts left on the bike, so i guess it was due to be replaced. this may not be your problem, but it really made a huge difference to my bike. Cheers Franky b.

cheers Franky, like yourself i reckon i've renewed most bits on the ignition side, plug, lead, coil, even new cdi.dont know if youve read the post on the Nology leads?i'm waiting for some feedback from members if and when they try them before i put my hand in my pocket again!reckon i might run some tests with a multimeter and check the results against the manual.regards.

Hi, if you,ve renewed all that your spark should be good, a good spark can be difficult to see in sunlight anyway, so try having a look in the dark you'd also be able to see if there is any tracking/leaking elsewhere, my Uncle once bought and put in four brand new plugs after a rebuild and spent days looking for a problem before he discovered that they were all duff, can't assume that a part works correctly 'cos it's new also happened to me with a new distributor cap, or you could be barking up the wrong tree many other reasons for a poor cold start,,,,,,Cheers, John,,,
