Hi guys Anyone interested in a digital speedo readout? I just fitted a push bike speedo to my SR! Now before you all kill yourselves laughing it actually works well has large digits is stable reading and accurate. It gets its signal to work off the reed switch in the speedo through a small easy to build cct . If there is any interest ill draw up a diagram and post it for you .Oh yeah you also get a clock trip meter average and max speed readout all for around $30 see you Mark

That's awesome mate! Digital isn't for me, but I'd still be interested in photos and a diagram just for my notes...
...and I did have a chuckle when I first read it - but it actually makes sense...

Mate of mine uses one. They work well. And I ain't laughing. If I find me another project bike, a push bike speedo and no tacho is going to be my first weight saving modification. My mate put the little magnet in one of the holes in his disc brake. Not the rotor itself but one of the rivets that hold the floating disk to the inner hub thingy. OPther options for a clean look would be some where on the back wheel or near the front sprocket somehow. Haven't figured it out, but possibilities are endless I reckon. Mick

I would be, especially as my speedo doesn't currently work! And a trip meter would be good so i didn't have to guess how much fuel i had left.

I had a bicycle speedo on my Kwaka GT550 after the speedo (like everything else, in a drawn-out process) went caput. It was a Cat Eye. It worked great, and included an odometer and other friendly functions. You've gotta get one that can have cms programmed into it, as the cheaper pre-set ones only have bicycle tyre dimensions available.
I measured the tyre using white-out on the tyre and the footpath, and rolled it around and measured the difference. I fitted the thing in a bodgy but simple and solid way (mind you, aesthetics didn't matter to me as much on the GT, but this could be done more nicely with a little more effort, and really nobody noticed it, tucked down there). The magnet is designed to bolt onto a bicycle spoke. Obviously our wheels are a bit chuncky for that. I bolted it onto a length of wire from a wire coat-hanger, and taped this to a think round piece of plastic from a plastic coat-hanger, with black electrical tape covering the whole thing. I made the length of both together such that they sat nicely within the shape of the front 'sprocket', without being able to slide up or down, and held by it cable ties and more black tape to neaten it up. Then I searched for some piece of metal - I found a picture hanger which worked - with a hole in one end, through whcih I put the bolt which holds on the front mud guard. the picture hanger then extended down long enough, and was bent at a right angle, such that I could bolt on the sensor just before the magnet. There was then plently of slack for the wire (probably not teh case if you bolt it near the disk) which I led back up to the handlebar, on which was placed the speedo.
This seemed accurate, and was good for up to 117km/hr. The only problem with the set-up was that my speedo had no night light. This is a real pain when you know there's cameras around, and it's worth searching for one that does have it, rather than having to rig up a $2 book light, which is what I did.
If I was building a cafe racer, I would use the speedo again - clip on bars, and no instrument cluster, with the speedo tucked inconspicuously down near the forks.

That's my plan for my next project Matt. Same thing - no instrument cluster, very small bike speedo sitting between the handlebar clamps maybe, custom wiring loom with ignition switch under the seat somewhere, etc. I reckon there exists the possibility of dropping maybe as much as 15 kilos off an SR's kerb weight. perhaps even more. Imagine - plastic guards, no instruments, air box, battery, centre stand, side covers, single wall head pipe, cut off the mounts for the rear pegs, alloy muffler, custom seat, drilled disks, replace the steel engine mounting plates with alloy, etc. Gotta be able to get some serious weight off. I read somewhere the other day that Tingate even ran a skinnier back tire. The possibilities intrigue me, and I'm keen to get into giving an SR or XT a serious diet. Mick

Yeah, well that is a problem. Had a company medical the other day. I'm 1.83m (six feet on the nose) and I weighed 102 kg (225 pounds.) If I was still the 70kg (154 pounds) I was when I started work 30yrs ago, imagine how quick my baby would go with me on board.

Ah yes, I have deliberately lost 20kgs since last October and I feel great for it. Like going back in time. ;D Now the SR loves going for rides...heh, heh...and so do I of course. How long would it take to remove 20kg from the bike...'course having said that my new CR better have lost at least that or I'll be disappointed...so that'd be 20 from me and 20 from the bike...heh, heh...plus more power! Yee ha! SR
