I've got a standard Craftsman inductive light. I've only used it so far on my 750Four, but it's been fine.

Used to be able to get these cheap neon ones that went in series in the plug lead. Useless. Get the Xenon one with the inductive pickup trigger. Mick

Thanks guys. I had been looking at one of the D cell powered lights, but with the battery so accessible on the SR, not sure it's needed. Gary Hopwheels

OK, not sure what I'm doing wrong. Bought an inductive timing light, and hooked to pos and neg terminals on battery, and pickup on spark plug wire, and there's no light. Thought perhaps I bought a dud, so went to my local auto parts store and bought another, same problem. Also tried grounding to the crank case. Still no go. So what am I doing wrong? ?? I just tried running it from my truck's battery and same problem. Am I lame or what? Not sure what to do here. I think I'm following the instructions correctly. Hmmmmmmmm???

Did you try it on your Suzi for comparison?
It's below freezing in my garage just now. Maybe tomorrow afternoon I can try it on my SR and report back to ya.

My sympathy for the cold garage. I serviced my SR yesterday, 43 degrees C (109 degrees F by my calculator) in the shed with the doors open and every fan I have running. I am definitly going to have to install the airconditioner that has sat in the corner for the last 2 years.

Cruel, eh? It was 43 degrees in my shed on Sunday too. Bit surprised it was that hot down in Clare. I was labouring under the obviously false impression that Clare was just far enough south to be a bit cooler than Port Pirie. It was so hot that my wife, bless her, said "Why don't I put some old newspaper on the kitchen table and you can bring that tank inside and do the cut and polish?" Its the little things that make for a happy marriage. Or it could be that I just signed on the dotted line to buy a farm. Mick

Farms are going for a good price in this drought mate. A lot are dropping like flys, but good luck to you mate. Why do I work the farm 365 days a year to be smashed by the weather? Well, why work on old bikes when I could get a new one?
Because the trials make it interesting.

Hey guys: I didn't try hooking the light up to my Suzuki. Once it didn't work on my truck, I bailed on it, put the bike back together and rode it ;D. So, how are you guys hooking up a timing light to your bikes?

Hopwheels: I don't want to sound insulting. You do know the bike has to be running for the light to work? The inductive pickup will not work unless the plug is firing. You can not use an inductive light for static timing. please forgive me for mentioning this but your first post did not state if the bike was running or not. Again, I apologize .

No worries Chew, no apologies needed... yep it was running. Sorry I didn't mention that. The best bet is to never assume I know what I'm doing ;D. Maybe it was where I placed the pickup? I placed it on the plug wire, just above the cap.

Sorry I didn't get to test for you on my SR. I don't think it should make any difference, but I noticed you hooked up your light to both battery terminals. I've always hooked up the negative to ground (bike frame). Of course, on a British postive-ground you'd do the opposite.
