has anyone retro fitted an electric start to a kickstart sr? Is it possible or do the older ones use the same starter gear, so its one or the other?
I'd love to have both like the modern ones.
cheers

when your talking about an sr250 there are no problems. with an sr500: forget it , buy yourself an xt600 engine with electric start and put it in an sr500 frame, this has been done

So I can do it with the SR250? I was informed I could only run one or the other.
Thanks for the info. If anyone can give me some advie on how its done, that would be great.
Thanks again.

Must be able to retrofit electric start to an SR250 - there is one for sale in my local bike shop right now. The starter motor is in front of the engine, and appears to drive the flywheel on the lefthand side of the bike. Either that or this bike has a gear driven generator. Unlikely I think. Looks like all you would need would be the startermotor, the geared flywheel, the different outer case, and a bit of thinking about wiring and a relay/solenoid. I did not take a whole lot of notice tonight, I actually stopped to drool over a brand new naked 1300 Honda. Can I use that word Honda in this forum? Anyway, from memory it looked like all the mods would be on the left side, so I can't see how it would necessitate the removal of your ability to kickstart the bike. The ideal situation will be if I can convince my wife to let me buy this rather ratty looking SR250 as a project cafe bike. Electric start would have to be the first thing to go west in the search for the lightest possible weight. I reckon a cafed SR250 would be a lovely little beast on a winding road. Mick

You're right about the SR250 in cafe form Mike. Thats how mine finds itself at the moment, and '04 model with electric start (which I kept on, as its my commuter back and forward). The fella on this website www.doctordanger.com/motorbikeroad/Norton.htmlretro fitted an electric start to a norton commando. Pretty cool. I'd love to do the same to my 78 sr500, so many bloody traffic lights and idiots around here, its inevitable I'll stall in trafffic at some stage thanks to a suicidal taxi. Theyre are worse at making up their minds than a flock of sun dazed sheep. I don't want to get stuck if I can't kick her over. At worst I'll just transplant a later model with electric start as suggested.

Hi, I vaugely recall an Aus modification where they put starters onto XR Hondas...perhaps try Ballards...XR's Only...in Sydney as I recall.
Perhaps you could mount one on the rear upper left of the cases...probably look like an add-on though.
Can't recall anyone having done this before...it'd be unique...personally I like the kickstart method...
Good luck with it.
Are you in the SR Club? I would like to get hold of the e-mail addresses for all of the Sydney/NSW members..we are proposing an ACT organised SR 'thing'...not 100% sure exactly what yet...

I've just joined recently. Until last weekend I only had the 250, and now I've finally found a decent 500.
I'd love to get along to it if I get my bike sorted in time ie can get it started easily, blinkers fixed and speedo reattached etc etc
would be great to have some SR peole go over my bike in "the flesh",
Do you have my email through the forum or do you need me to send it to you?

Didnt early yama 2 smokes use a generator/starter system? The YB1(?) 200 twin springs to mind. Damndest starter, you couldnt press the button quickly enough for it not to start once it was warmish. I do have to go with the rest of the team tho, kick starts rarely fail.
